On the occasion of the Amsterdam Pride, De Vonk is organizing a screening of Pride (2014), the film about Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), the movement that made history in 1980s Britain.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Ray Goodspeed, a founding member of LGSM, and Gianmaria Colpani, a researcher who has studied the movement.

Pride. Was what once a protest, has taken on an increasingly commercial, neoliberal character. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Queer people have a long history of being involved in activism against capitalism, imperialism, and inequality on both large and small scales. And that fight continues today, including at De Vonk.

Pride (2014) tells the story of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners: a group of lesbians and gay men in England who, in 1984–1985, supported the miners who were on strike at the time. Against the backdrop of Thatcher-era neoliberalism and a country shifting to the right, these queers knew exactly whose side they were on: they raised funds and stood shoulder to shoulder with the working people bearing the brunt of Thatcher’s ruthless policies.

LGSM’s legacy lives on in movements like Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants and Queers for Palestine, and in the many queer people active in the broader left. Mainstream Pride may be the most visible form of LGBT ‘activism’ today, but it’s far from the only one.

Gelukkig kan het ook anders: queer mensen zijn historisch gezien betrokken geweest bij activisme tegen kapitalisme, imperialisme en ongelijkheid, op grote en kleine schaal. En zijn dat nog steeds, zoals bij De Vonk.

Pride vertelt het verhaal van Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners: een groep lesbo’s en homo’s in Engeland die zich in 1984-1985 inzette voor de op dat moment stakende mijnwerkers. In een context van verrechtsing en neoliberalisering onder Thatcher zag deze groep queers duidelijk in wie hun steun verdiende: ze zamelden geld in en gingen op bezoek bij de werkende mensen die slachtoffer werden van Thatchers ijskoude beleid. 

De erfenis van LGSM leeft voort in bewegingen als Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants en Queers for Palestine, en queer mensen die zich inzetten binnen bredere linkse bewegingen. Het ‘activisme’ van de mainstream Pride mag vandaag de meest zichtbare vorm van LGBT-activisme zijn, het is niet de enige.
