The Arcana of Reproduction: Housewives, Prostitutes, Workers and Capital, Verso 2025
Leopoldina Fortunati in dialogue with Jamila Mascat
Time: Thursday October 8, 2026 at 15.00-17.00
Location: Chirurgisch Theater, Universiteitsbibliotheek, UvA
Emerging from the great social upheavals that contested the sexual and racial divisions of labor globally in the 1970s, Leopoldina Fortunati’s classic work expands and transforms how we analyze the sphere of reproduction, redefining the value of the individual’s life and the labor performed in the home. Fortunati’s work provides some of the earliest theorizations of ‘immaterial,’ ‘affective,’ and ‘caring’ labor, and of the role of technology in reproduction, articulated decades before their popular reception in English academic literature. Reading this work some 40 years after its original publication gives us the tools to analyze the contemporary state of capitalist development and of women’s lives today. The text remains prefigurative and essential in our era of digital labor. (https://www.versobooks.com/products/2718-the-arcana-of-reproduction)
Leopoldina Fortunati was a core member of Lotta Femminsta and the Wages for Housework Movement internationally. Along with Mariarosa Dalla Costa, Selma James and Silvia Federici, she composed many of the group’s core theoretical and political texts. Her early work continues to inform movements concerned with struggles over reproduction globally and in subsequent work as a theorist of media and technology, Fortunati has been at the vanguard of contemporary theory addressing the relation between gendered labor and technology.
For students: For 1 ECTS, attendance at the event and a one-page critical response are required. Please contact m.cetinic@uva.nl.

You’re a student in the Netherlands and you can’t find a course on Marxist theory, political economy or history of the labor movement in your program? Or are you a researcher who would like to break through the isolation and connect with others who work with Marxist approaches? Or an activist that would like to know what Marxists have to offer for your politics these days?
Join marxism-nl.org!
Amid global turmoil, the rise of far-right and fascist politics around the world, university budget cuts and political attacks on our institutions during the protests in solidarity with Palestine, we came together as a group of Marxist students, researchers, and teachers active in the Netherlands, to unite and defend our trenches.
We created a platform (marxism-nl.org) and a network (Marxist Research Group), to connect existing initiatives, share resources, and collaborate on new activities.
This website presents the network and the initiatives of the Marxist Research Group.
marxism-nl.org promotes both academic and non-academic events such as public lectures, societal and political debates, reading groups, book launches by members or affiliated groups. It is open to whoever is interested and aims at fostering strategic and practical collaborations within and outside academia.
If you are interested in Marxist research or teaching and active in the Netherlands get involved!
If you would like to become part of the network or organize something yourself don’t hesitate to get in touch directly under contact@marxism-nl.org
